Crown Dependencies: Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man

Why the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are linked to the King but are not part of the UK.

The Crown Dependencies are three self-governing territories with a special constitutional relationship to the British Crown: the Bailiwick of Jersey, the Bailiwick of Guernsey (which includes Alderney and Sark) and the Isle of Man. They are not part of the United Kingdom and were not part of the European Union, but they have their own legislatures, legal systems and tax regimes.

The Isle of Man's parliament, Tynwald, is one of the oldest continuously sitting parliaments in the world, dating back over a thousand years. Defence and most foreign affairs for all three are handled by the UK government on their behalf.

The exam may ask whether the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man are part of the UK (they are not), or which body is the parliament of the Isle of Man (Tynwald).
