The Role of the Prime Minister

How a Prime Minister is chosen, what they do, and the official residence at 10 Downing Street.

The Prime Minister (PM) is the leader of the political party that wins the most seats in a general election. They are appointed by the monarch and are the head of government. Their official residence is 10 Downing Street in central London (Number 11 Downing Street is the official residence of the Chancellor of the Exchequer). The PM also has a country residence at Chequers in Buckinghamshire.

The Prime Minister chairs the Cabinet, sets the overall direction of government policy, appoints and dismisses ministers, and represents the UK at international summits. They face MPs every Wednesday at noon for Prime Minister's Questions in the House of Commons.
