Hinduism in Britain

The faith of around one million UK residents, the festival of Diwali, and where British Hindus live.

Around one million people in the UK identify as Hindu, making Hinduism the third-largest religion. Most British Hindus trace their heritage to India, with significant numbers from East African Asian communities that arrived from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania in the 1960s and 1970s. London, Leicester, Birmingham and Manchester have the largest Hindu populations.

Diwali, the festival of lights, is the most widely known Hindu festival; it falls in October or November and is celebrated with lamps, fireworks and family meals. Holi, the spring festival of colour, and Janmashtami, marking the birth of Lord Krishna, are also widely observed.
