The 2012 Summer Olympics, formally the Games of the XXX Olympiad, were held in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012, with the Paralympic Games following at the end of August. London became the first city to host the modern Summer Olympics three times (after 1908 and 1948). Most of the new venues were built around the Olympic Park in Stratford in east London.

Team GB won 65 medals — including 29 gold — finishing third in the overall medal table. Memorable moments included Mo Farah's 5,000 m and 10,000 m double, Jessica Ennis's heptathlon gold and the success of British cycling. The Paralympics that followed are widely credited with changing public attitudes to disability sport.
