Sir Roger Bannister, Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir Steve Redgrave and the country's most celebrated athletes.

Several British sportspeople have become household names. Sir Roger Bannister was the first man to run a mile in under four minutes, on 6 May 1954 at Iffley Road in Oxford. Sir Bobby Charlton was a key player in England's 1966 World Cup-winning football team. Sir Steve Redgrave won gold in rowing at five consecutive Olympic Games between 1984 and 2000.

More recently, Sir Mo Farah won 5,000 m and 10,000 m double gold at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics; Sir Andy Murray won Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016; Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill won heptathlon gold at London 2012. The London Olympics of 2012 are often cited as one of the most successful Games in modern British history.
